Walk across a Winnipeg basement in January and you will often feel it. Cold air pours in at the rim joist band where the floor framing sits on the foundation. That narrow strip of wood is full of penetrations for wiring, plumbing and ducts, and it is exposed to outdoor temperatures on the other side of the sill plate.
Fibreglass stuffed into rim bays rarely air-seals. Cold air still moves around the batt, and moisture can condense on cold wood. Closed-cell spray foam fills the bay, sticks to the foundation and joists, and creates a continuous seal along the perimeter of the house.
